AP & Pre-AP  Elective Teachers & Courses 2011-2012

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses allow students an opportunity to take college level classes while in high school.  Students have the potential to earn college credit for those courses based upon the end of course test score and college rules regarding awarding credits.  Pre-AP courses are designed to prepare students for taking AP courses; although, it is not a requirement for entering an AP class.  All students are encouraged to challenge themselves by taking one or more Pre-AP and AP classes.  Research indicates that students who take one or more AP classes while in high school are better prepared for college and are more likely to have a successful college experience!

Class Announcements
AP CONTRACT-IMPORTANT!!
Every student that signed up for Advanced Placement Courses for this year 2010-1011 needs to have an AP Contract sign per Course. This contract was given to students at the time of scheduling before summer.

The contract explains the commitment and seriousness of taking courses that are College level and require higher levels of studies and time commitment. Once a student signs up for an AP course ans signs the AP contract, the student agrees to stay in the AP course for nine weeks and if the student needs to withdraw after that, a parent conference is required.

Students that do not have this Contract signed by parents before the beginning of school, will be automatically dropped from those courses.

AP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Vision for the Freedom HS Advanced Placement program is to increase AP participation and scores. In order to meet the vision, an AP Certificate program has been established. Students who meet prescribed criteria will be recognized with an AP Certificate upon graduation. AP Certificates will be awarded to eligible students beginning with the Class of 2010 based on the following criteria:

 AP Certificate of Honor

5 or more Pre-AP courses in at least 3 different disciplines

5 or more AP courses in at least 3 different disciplines

Earn a C+ or higher in each course

AP Certificate of Merit

3 or more Pre-AP courses in at least 2 different disciplines

3 or more AP courses in at least 2 different disciplines

Earn a C or higher in each course

Note:
*Students who lack the required number of Pre-AP courses may meet the requirement by taking additional AP courses. * AP science courses that require a co-requisite lab (biology, chemistry & physics) will count as 1 AP course. The student must earn a C+ or higher (for Certificate of Honor) or a C or higher (for Certificate of Merit) in at least one of the required classes (lecture or lab).

Seniors interested in applying for an AP Certificate should complete the application that will be made available in the
Counseling Center, Satellite Office and AP website after February 2, 2010. An up-to-date transcript and semester report card must accompany the application.

For Your Information

Since AP exam scores are reported after graduation, scores can not be used as part of the AP Certificate requirement. The College Board recognizes AP student achievement by awarding certificates for the following:

AP Scholar – receive grades of 3 or higher on 3 or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Honor - receive an average grade of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on 5 or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction - receive an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on 4 or more AP exams.

National AP Scholar - granted to students in the US who receive an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on 8 or more of these exams.

Prince William County Schools gives Classy awards to students who earn AP Scholar with Distinction and National AP Scholar.
